The world is growing faster than we are currently adapting. As populations increase and resources deplete, it’s only a matter of time before we reach a state of crisis. We must rethink, re-evaluate and restart from the ground-up, building new infrastructure to care for our planet and its citizens. For the innovators at the Tungsram Group, evolution is part of their DNA.

“I think it’s very clear that we have to change the way that we live and that we operate,” explained Joerg Bauer, President & CEO, Tungsram Group. “We now have at our fingertips the data and resources, so our idea is to combine data with technology to make a better place.”

The Tungsram Group is dedicated to finding and delivering data driven solutions, but this is a new direction for the 125-year-old company. Until around three years ago, Tungsram was primarily known for producing over 6,000 different light products – its name is even a portmanteau of tungsten and wolfram, the two main metals used in the production of light bulbs – but as the world is adapting and embracing the digital landscape, Tungsram is evolving.

One of the most important causes for Tungsram is to provide solutions for areas of the world that do not have the climate conditions to adequately grow their own food. Internationally, a large amount of the food we produce perishes each year in transit to its delivery destination, and Tungsram is investing in systems to help grow food locally for areas that need it most through the production of UV and biolighting. As a company with such a heritage in the lighting world, a logical step for Tungsram has been to invest and innovate in the Agritech industry.

“We have a strong heritage in creating lighting solutions, and we can combine that with IT technology and Biotechnology,” explained Ferenc Pongrácz, Innovation GM, Tungsram Group. “Our vision is not to be a supplier of lights, but to be a company that provides solutions.”

Building on this, Tungsram wants to help in the development of smart cities. Making use of current technological innovations and connectivity to reduce carbon emissions, food waste, and track consumption and pollution through city-wide tracking systems, Tungsram wants to make cities run smoother, safer, and healthier.

“Every day we work very hard on those future-safe solutions around food security, sanitation, and creating smart, more liveable places and cities and villages,” concluded Joerg Bauer. “Because we strongly believe that we can have an impact.”

International wellbeing at the heart of Tungsram’s philosophy, solving those challenges to create a better and more efficient society through growth and evolution. Tungsram is dedicated to driving global change, and making use of over one hundred years of experience in the light production world, the future will be brighter than ever.
