Society is rethinking its priorities. Climate change is having increasingly visible effects, the use of plastics is being questioned and the way businesses can solve end-of-life challenges for their products will be scrutinised. In order to mitigate these harmful effects, it is essential that products are designed with materials that can be easily recycled, have a low climate impact and overall reduce material use, while still fulfilling the main purpose they are there for. Companies encouraging consumers to make conscious choices that prioritise the environment are becoming an unmissable focus for related industries.
As what Duni Group has been doing to reshape the industry – a sustainable future needs innovative solutions. Johan Mårtensson, the Business Development and Innovation Manager of Duni Group, adds, "We are also looking at the innovation from a more holistic perspective, not just focusing on material, but also looking at the environmental, social and governmental aspects of sustainability."
Since its inception in 1949, Duni Group has grown into a fully international business – renowned for its expertise in materials and design. Once known as a Swedish producer of paper cups and napkins, the company now adapts into a market-leading provider of innovative, sustainable products for table-setting and take-away.
Duni Group is aiming for a circular economy model that prioritises sustainable practices as high up in the waste hierarchy as possible, throughout its operations and offerings. With the comprehensive approach of focusing on reducing waste and maximising the recyclability of materials, the company's ambitious goal of achieving full circularity by 2030 involves design, material innovation, renewable solutions and recycling solutions. Supporting a closed-loop system, Hanna Banica, Marketing Director at Duni Group, says, "At Duni Group, we start with narrowing this loop by focusing on the start of life and also the end of life of our products."
Duni Group firmly believes that the recycling system alone won't solve the climate crisis, since the choice of raw materials is actually equally important. The company aims to maximise the usage of renewable raw materials with a focus on fibres and minimise the consumption of plastic, especially virgin fossil plastic, to switch to renewable or recycled plastic. Ms. Banica explains, "We are using FSC®-sourced forest materials for our products, and we're also optimising our SKU pallets, so we're transporting less air during distribution to lower our carbon footprint."
In order to design products that fit into the existing recycling system, to create convenience for consumers to engage in this loop for instance, Duni Group has built a partnership with the Swedish company & Repeat, which has developed systems that improve disposable packaging collection. Currently, Duni Group wants all of its products to fulfil at least one of the following options: recycling, composting, or reuse.
Since the production of its unique premium material Dunicel® in 1965, Duni Group is continuously innovating to provide even better solutions to the world. Now the innovative Bio Dunicel® material does very well with a fossil-free material that results in a 30% lower climate impact, just as its ambition goes: "Duni Group wants to become a regenerative business while at the same time providing solutions for today".
