As the world faces increasing pressures including climate change, growing populations, demand for instant connectivity, and data security on levels never before imagined, the importance of critical human infrastructure – electricity, water, communications - has never been more important to a sustainable future.
Now in its second century of business, employee-owned company and global engineering and construction leader Black & Veatch thinks about infrastructure and its potential to transform the world. The company believes that it’s one thing to get the job done but another to drive sustainability, deliver next-level reliability through resilience, and turn data into action.
Black & Veatch specializes in making the invisible invaluable. Its critical human infrastructure solutions ensure that the things people expect to happen, like clean water, reliable electricity, connected devices and more, actually happen. For over a century, the company has developed engineering and construction solutions that build a world of difference. Blending innovation with collaboration to make marvels — in decarbonization, clean transportation, distributed energy, and grid modernization – its work may not always be visible, but when it comes to creating a better future, nothing matters more than resilient, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure.
“At Black & Veatch, we believe that innovation and gathering the best, diverse minds is key in solving the world’s most pressing problems,” says Chairman & CEO Mario Azar. “Our passion for delivering the highest quality solutions for our clients not only benefits us as employee-owners but also allows us to make a positive impact in the world.”
Some recent examples of Black & Veatch’s innovation in sustainability include:
- Repurposing a former rock quarry into a 2.4-billion-gallon water storage site for the metropolis of Atlanta, Georgia, to eventually be used as a drinking water supply
- Converting a coal-fueled power plant in Utah into what will become the world’s largest industrial green hydrogen production and storage facility – a key fuel for decarbonizing the future
- Design and construction of a first-of-its-kind electric vehicle charging station focused on large EVs – a project that earned mention in Fast Company’s Innovation by Design Awards
These and many other projects demonstrate a vision for innovating toward a better future that is shared by all Black & Veatch employee-owners. The company believes that today’s businesses can either be disrupted, or be the disruptor. The challenges presented by climate change, population growth, and technological advancement will only continue to grow and become more complex. Black & Veatch views these great challenges as great opportunities as it works to fulfill its mission of Building a World of Difference.
