Every day, farmers all over the world wake up before dawn to tend their fields, fields that grow the food we eat. Like parents raising children, these farmers must tend to these fields with patience and care. But these farmers, as well as the global food system, nature, and climate, are facing growing challenges.
The food we eat is responsible for nearly 25% of the world’s total CO2 emissions, with a significant portion coming from the production and use of fertilizers. According to the UN, 928 million people were at risk of experiencing severe food shortages in 2020 – an increase of 148 million from the previous year. Nearly 80 % of the world’s poorest people rely primarily on agriculture. These are severe challenges that we need to tackle as global residents and Yara is in a unique position to lead a nature-positive and resilient food system fit for the future.
Founded in Norway in 1905, Yara is a world-leading crop nutrition company and provider of environmental and agricultural solutions. Originally a mineral fertilizer company that sought to solve the emerging famine in Europe, it has significantly expanded its product portfolio and services through a culture of purpose-driven innovation that embraces curiosity and ambition. Today, Yara is continuing in its tradition of driving meaningful global impact by capitalizing on over 100 years of agronomic knowledge, collaborative partnerships with farmers, food companies and policy makers, and open communication.
Feeding a growing population will require novel approaches and innovations for sustainable food production. To this end, Yara is working to bring regenerative agriculture to the forefront of global food production. Yara sees regenerative agriculture as a systematic, outcome-based approach to adopt the best sustainable farming practices that positively affect nature and climate, across five recurring themes: climate, soil health, resource use, biodiversity and farmer prosperity.
A key component for regenerative agriculture will be Yara’s green fertilizers; a fossil-free, effortless and impactful way to decarbonize food. Yara’s green fertilizers ensure crop yield and quality with verified and quantifiable carbon reductions. By using renewable power sources, Yara’s green fertilizer production has little-to-no carbon footprint, contributing to a sustainable, climate-friendly food economy. In addition, Yara’s green fertilizers can be easily applied to various crops and at various stages without affecting current agriculture practices or disrupting food supply chains.
As the population grows, the world will need to grow more food with the current available land. Through green fertilizers and regenerative agriculture solutions, Yara will collaborate with all to ensure a nature-positive food future.
