Remote working is now a reality for every business. As the world shrinks and engineering talent matters more, where it is located in the world matters less.

Jeremy Johnson, Co-founder and CEO at Andela says that the world has moved rapidly into a new model of working:

“We've realized that we're not all going back to the office. Companies have had both the requirement, but also the opportunity to rethink how they plan for sourcing talent and building teams to solve problems together. Andela is the world's fastest growing technical talent marketplace. We help the best technologists in the world accelerate their career by connecting them to top companies seeking to fast-track their global hiring.”

Andela has built a community of technologists from over a hundred countries. By making this marketplace available to businesses, Andela is able to quickly fill talent gaps as they arise. Sachin Bhagwat, EVP of Client Business at Andela says that the company’s philosophy is simple:

“We believe that brilliance is evenly distributed but opportunities are not. We work with our customers who share the idea that they don't need to be working with someone who's next to them, but there are equally capable talent available globally. We are able to connect customers with brilliant individuals, wherever they are in the world.”

One of the challenges for hiring remote talent is trust: how can businesses be sure that they are working with the right people? Alvaro Oliveira, EVP of Talent Business at Andela says that they add value to the process by conducting a rigorous vetting process that builds-in reliability:

“When engineers apply to join Andela, our task is to understand not only their abilities from a technical sense, but also to assess their preparation to work well with our clients. We have a number of automated steps and coding challenges, making sure they can speak English and they will also have a manual human interview process with our team to guarantee quality.”

The result, says Courtney Machi, VP of Product at Andela, is that the right person can be found for the role quickly, turning the problem of hiring talent into an opportunity to work with the best in the world.

“We've built technology that enables us to service our clients much faster. Our technology and the platform we've built enables us to immediately run a search on everybody that we've got in our community and surface the best fit for any particular role. Beyond a particular skill, we can make decisions based on location, the time zone overlap with the client, and the talent’s career goals. It's all about personalization. Over time, the platform learns to surface the profiles that that client has shown that they are a fit, saving the customer time.”

Alvaro Oliveira says that while the company answers the needs of its customers, it also has to look after the talent community to ensure that matches are win-win and keep talent keen to work with Andela:

“People are trusting us with their career and we want to help them get into the remote working environment, guide them to their next jobs. We want to provide access to services such as health insurance that you would get from traditional employment. Andela is here to help talent on that journey.”

Jeremy Johnson says that Andela has proven to be a model that works for talent and employers:

“According to a 2022 3rd party impact survey, the average person who gets a role through Andela increases their take home pay by 87% percent from their previous role. This is up from 64% in 2021.  Andela also invests in communities where we source talent: at any given point, there are tens of thousands of people learning software development through programs that Andela runs in partnership with companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Google.”

Courtney Machi agrees that the approach requires Andela to nurture the relationship with talent as a route to answering customer need:

“Throughout the entire working relationship, our team is checking in periodically with talent to ask: how is this engagement going for you? How are you feeling? Are you satisfied? What are the issues? We can use that information to make sure that the talent is having a great experience and that the clients' needs are being served.”

Jeremy Johnson says that the future of work is through talent networks which have the power to change lives all over the world.

“By bringing people together, across cultures and continents, we’re able to show that we’re all actually more similar than we are different.. That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about Andela’s mission and the opportunity we have to change the way the world works.
